Sunday, November 5 Update

Hello all,

This week PRSD will be hosting My Life Online, an assembly during the day (Nov 8 from 9am-10am for 4-8th graders in the Arete MPR) and an evening event for parents (November 8 at 7pm in the Cottage Hill MPR). The goal is to teach kids to be “Safe, Smart, and Kind Online). Check the program out here… https://welcometomylifeonline.com/

*Typing Practice

Most of you know that we are struggling at Arete to show progress from year to year on CAASP testing (which is one of the assessments used to renew our charter petition every five years) as well as NWEA math and Star AR. As we analyze why this is occurring, it is becoming apparent that some of it may have to do with many of our students having a lack of access to typing practice. We love that families closely monitor their children’s screen time, and are hoping that you might consider having your child do some daily or a few times a week typing practice. Students in public school generally start practicing typing a few times a week starting in second grade.

These programs will teach your kiddos where to place their fingers for typing.

Email [email protected] to have her set up a free account for your kiddo!

Here's Dance Mat Typing https://www.dancemattypingguide.com/

There is also ed club https://www.edclub.com/  Which is a lot like Typing Pal- you'll have to pay to keep track of your progress

Then there are free typing games https://www.typing.com/student/games But these don't really focus on where to place your fingers

*California Healthy Kids Survey- It is that time of year again!

The survey is administered to all parents and staff and students at grades five-eight. It enables schools and communities to collect and analyze data regarding local youth health risks and behaviors, school connectedness, school climate, protective factors, and school violence. The anonymous survey helps us make decisions for our school plan. Please complete by Friday, December 8th.  We will be administering to students at school during the Blended Middle School program or when they are on campus for Winter Testing. We must have a permission form for 5th and 6th grades to complete. If parents of 7th and 8th graders do not want their student to participate, please email me at [email protected] to opt out.

Projects can be submitted by any Arete student!

*PRSD is focusing on reducing Tech Addiction in Children and building pathways for Digital Health. Each week I will share a NEW tidbit about this or how to to reduce screen time for kids who struggle with this.

*At the University of Washington, researchers found that burn victims who played a video game called Snow World required NO morphine. Subsequent MRI research showed that brain centers related to pain were more activated by the game than by actual morphine.

*In a 2010 study published in the journal “Pediatrics” by Dr. Dimitri Christakis at the University of Washington found that children who spent more than two hours a day in front of a screen- computer or television- were twice as likely to have attention problems.

If they are in the 30th percentile or lower, we will be reaching out to you now or in six weeks or so to invite them to free math intervention with a credentialed teacher. (We saw huge growth in our students who participated in reading/phonics intervention last year). This is an amazing opportunity to receive free intervention as part of our MTSS Grant. functioning.

On Tuesday, October 31st all kids on campus can dress in their Halloween costumes and will Trick or Treat around the playground at 11:30. All students who are not on campus that day may sign up to come Trick or Treat with their parents. Please reserve a spot for each kiddo who you are bringing on campus that day! Please do not "show up" that day if you are not signed up or we will not have enough treats/toys. We need volunteers and treats or toys for the Trick or Treating. There are two parts to this Sign Up.
Part 1- Sign up to bring in your students if they do not normally attend school on Tuesdays. Part 2- Sign up to come in and hand out 40 treats/toys. This only works if people come in to help that day! All treats should be absolutely 100% NUT FREE. Please sign up for something if you plan on attending! Even if your kids normally attend on Tuesdays, we still need people to bring treats and pass them out!

This is a BRING YOUR OWN BAG EVENT!!! We will NOT be providing disposable bags this year. Please bring or send in a bag for your kiddo and maybe an extra for a kiddo who forgot. Thanks
