Important Information Elementary Band

Dear Parents/Guardians of upper elementary students,

My name is Joshua Horton; thank you for giving me this opportunity to introduce myself as Magnolia Intermediate School’s newest music teacher! I am writing to invite your fourth and fifth-grade students to join the Elementary Band! The group will be rehearsing four days each week (Monday-Thursday) and is part of the elementary afterschool program.

I am excited to offer instruction on four different musical instruments: flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. For a very low financial commitment, your child(ren) can receive hands-on training and perform in concerts this school year!

For additional information, please read the attached document before addressing any questions to my school email: [email protected]. If you are ready to sign up for Elementary Band, please follow the link and enter your responses in GoogleForms. I wish you the best in this fall season and hope to meet many of you soon.

Sincerely,

Joshua Horton

Tuesday, September 6 Update

*Kids were troopers today! Yeah. Please continue to send in water bottles in daily as it will be hot for awhile!

*Breakfast pickup for those who signed up will be in the front office from now on from 8:55-9am.

*If you have received an email from [email protected], Sheila Volek, Andrea Magda, or Mary Chaddock, please pick up curriculum soon as we are needing the MPR for lunch and enrichment classes. You can pill up to the right side of the school at the delivery spot and we can quickly help you load up.

*Cross Country practice (T and Th) and the scheduled meet on Wednesday are all canceled this week. 6th-8th graders have a meet Saturday morning @8am, that is still on!  Coach Tamo will email families details in a few days.

Heat Warning

Good evening,
We plan on having school tomorrow but PLEASE send in water bottles so the kiddos can refill their bottles with chilled water from out water coolers. Fruit might be a great choice for a snack as it is supposed to be hydrating. Healthine.com recommends watermelon, strawberries, peaches, cantaloupe and oranges as being in the top 10 of most hydrating foods. We have fun activities planned for indoor recess and will have quick brain breaks in the morning under the trees if the temperatures allow. But again, PLEASE send in water bottles (labeled with your kiddos name, of course!)

Sunday, September 4 Update

Good Evening families!

Next week will continue to be extremely hot. PLEASE send your kiddo with a water bottle. We have two cold water refill stations on campus, one in the MPR and one in the nurse’s office just off the corner of the front office, but kiddos NEED a water bottle to refill. We have small dixie cups for those who forget, but that is not sufficient in temperatures this high!

Fall 2022 Field Trips

We are so excited to offer a new round of field trips. For the days of September 3-7, please sign up for one field trip so all families have access. After that you may sign up for as many as you would like. Please pay attention to age restrictions. Please watch dates closely and make note of the field trips that require prepayment for adult chaperones. Please pay 2 weeks early in the Arete office with exact cash, check made to PRSD, or at Mealtime https://www.mymealtime.com/AppsAdmin/SignIn.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fAppsAdmin($20 minimum). We pre-pay for all Arete students so if you need to cancel with less than a week's notice, you will need to reimburse Arete for the field trip fee for your child. All field trips will start at the field trip location with check in 15 minutes before the start time. Families are responsible for making transportation arrangements for their children. Families typically join the field trip. Please email at [email protected] if you need to drop off and pick up your child.

Heat Advisory Through Tuesday Evening

Please see message below and be aware of the excessive Heat Warning for Nevada County.  Please limit outside strenuous activities, encourage plenty of fluids and watch students and staff for signs of distress (Move to a cooler location at the first sign of heat illness (dizziness, nausea, headaches, muscle cramps); rest and slowly drink a cool liquid).

The National Weather Service Sacramento has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for portions of Nevada County beginning Saturday morning through Tuesday evening. Higher temperatures can be dangerous for all people, especially the very young, senior citizens, pregnant women, and those with chronic medical conditions.

Nevada County’s Office of Emergency Services partners with Nevada County Public Health to review our plans for Excessive Heat Emergencies during high-heat events. Nevada County’s Department of Social Services is activating Cooling Centers for residents due to extreme daytime temperatures and minimal overnight recovery.

Beat the Heat at Cooling Centers this Weekend

As temperatures climb into the weekend, residents can beat the heat in cool public places, like your local Nevada County Library branch, grocery stores, or movie theaters. The Grass Valley Library and Madelyn Helling Library (Nevada City) are open until 6:00 p.m., and the Penn Valley Library is open until 4:00 p.m. through Friday, September 2nd.

As we enter an Excessive Heat Warning Saturday, Cooling Centers will open at the Grass Valley and Penn Valley libraries from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday, September 3rd through 6th. Air-conditioned space and water will be available. Well-behaved pets on a leash are allowed, and both locations are ADA accessible. Library desk services will only be available during regular library hours, but residents can access the Wi-Fi and look at the materials while using the space.

Tips for Hot Weather:

  • Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water*, especially before, during, and after outdoor activities.
  • Take frequent breaks while working or playing outdoors.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light clothing; wear a wide-brimmed hat to cover the face, ears, and neck if you’ll be outside.
  • Apply sunscreen (at least SPF 15) 15 minutes before going outdoors and re-apply at least every two hours.
  • Drink plenty of fluids but avoid beverages that have caffeine or alcohol.
  • Plan strenuous outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day; limit time outside during peak heat.
  • Pace physical activities, starting slowly and picking up the pace gradually.
  • Wear sunglasses that provide 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. Chronic exposure to the sun can cause cataracts.
  • Check family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning. Higher temperatures can be especially dangerous for those who have conditions that make the body less able to regulate temperature.
  • Move to a cooler location at the first sign of heat illness (dizziness, nausea, headaches, muscle cramps); rest and slowly drink a cool liquid.
  • Never leave a child or pet in a parked car or asleep in the direct sunlight.
  • Take care of pets! Make sure they have plenty of shade and water to drink. Don’t leave your pets in the car unattended during hot weather, and walk dogs when the temperature is cooler; asphalt can be over 50 degrees hotter than the outdoor temperature.
  • If your doctor limits the amount of fluid you drink or take water pills, ask them how much you should drink when the weather is hot.

Also, for the next week or two, we will be placing curriculum orders only and will postpone office and art supply orders until later in the month. Please do not call or email to ask if your order is complete. That pulls someone away from processing orders. We are bringing in extra staff this week to help speed along the process. If you have a spare couple of hours and want to volunteer some time checking off books, we would love to have you. While you are waiting for your order to arrive, review the strategies I sent out last night or reach out to your EA for ideas. We are excited to offer so many curriculums this year, but it does bog down the system. Thanks for your patience!

Arete Family Orientation Sign Up

Arete Family Orientation August 16, 2022

August 16 is the first day of instruction for the 2022-2023 school year and Arete is so excited to offer a Family Orientation with a variety of educational and fun options on that day. Read carefully through the descriptions and sign up for the ones that best fit your families’ needs. Children are invited and we will have staff to supervise school aged children in a classroom or on the playground when they are not needed in a training. Children under four should be kept with you.

We are asking that all new families attend one of these orientations and many of you came last week. Thanks for that! The last one is…

August 16 from 8-8:30 Coffee Talk with Director (Zoom and In Person in the Arete Library)

We are hoping all families will attend Education Through Music (ETM) training from 10:25-11:25. Several of our staff have gone through these training sessions and we implement these practices in Resource Center Classes weekly. ETM trains teachers all around the United States to bring music to the classroom and PRSD is paying them to come to Arete!  At Education Through Music, we believe that every child, at every school, deserves access to high-quality music education. It is part of a well-rounded education, essential for students’ social and emotional well-being, and a critical tool for establishing equity and access.

*Thursday morning we start NWEA/AR Testing for students 2nd-8th grade. All students must attend in person testing on one of these. If a chromebook is checked out to your family, please bring it charged and ready to your testing day. The extra Chromebooks we have are reserved for the students who do not have a Chromebook. Please come early to check those out from the office. Check or edit your sign up here…

2nd-8th Grade Fall NWEA Math and AR Reading Assessments 2022-2023

*Supply and Curriculum Orders are just starting to trickle in on orders I placed on August 2nd. That means they are taking 1-2 weeks to ship. As soon as your order comes in, we inventory everything and asset tag anything that is non-consumable and has to be returned to the school. Then we check it out to your child and email you to pick it up. Please be patient! We are working all hours of the day (and some of the night) to get these orders placed and processed. Until then, use curriculum you already have, check out awesome books from our school library, and download free worksheets off the internet. If you are feeling stuck or overwhelmed, breathe and work with your EA. They are incredible resources and will help you. They LOVE doing that!

*Sign up for our Arete Charter Academy Family Facebook Group here...

*We are so excited to announce the release of an unprecedented amount of amazing enrichment classes being offered this Fall. The sign up is in ABC order. BMS students receive electives as part of their program, so if parents sign them up here, they will need to pay out of pocket. Reminder that these are the only items that DO Not need to be added to an Arete budget form as we can track them on the Sign Up. Please, do not schedule a series class and the individual classes for the same day. If you do, we will cancel the individual classes as you cannot be double booked. Fall Enrichment Sign Ups are HERE

We are SO excited to see you all this week!
