Sunday, September 11 Update

Good Evening families!

This week we are thankful for cooler temperatures and yet now dealing with the poor air quality. School is not usually canceled due to poor air quality as often “our schools are better equipped, with higher quality air ventilation and filtration systems, than residential homes, “ according to Nevada County Superintendent of Schools. We will be closely monitoring the air quality throughout the day when determining if students can be outside for breaks. If we are able to be outside, all students will have the opportunity of coming inside the library with me if they are struggling with the outside air.

*Supply and Curriculum Orders are all caught up (unless you ordered them just last week). Some have been sitting there for 2-3 weeks. If you have received an email to come pick up supplies and curriculum, it would be super helpful if you would come and pick it up. You can pull up to the delivery spot to the right of the Arete building and we can help you load it up.

Trades Day is Postponed Until Next Year

Trades Day is being postponed until next year. They want to ensure it's an amazing experience and need more time to prepare.

The Nevada County Contractors' Association is really excited by the interest from our middle schools. They hope to come to Arete with some engaging and assembly-ready activities this school year. More details to come.

Important Information Elementary Band

Dear Parents/Guardians of upper elementary students,

My name is Joshua Horton; thank you for giving me this opportunity to introduce myself as Magnolia Intermediate School’s newest music teacher! I am writing to invite your fourth and fifth-grade students to join the Elementary Band! The group will be rehearsing four days each week (Monday-Thursday) and is part of the elementary afterschool program.

I am excited to offer instruction on four different musical instruments: flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. For a very low financial commitment, your child(ren) can receive hands-on training and perform in concerts this school year!

For additional information, please read the attached document before addressing any questions to my school email: [email protected]. If you are ready to sign up for Elementary Band, please follow the link and enter your responses in GoogleForms. I wish you the best in this fall season and hope to meet many of you soon.

Sincerely,

Joshua Horton

You can pill up to the right side of the school at the delivery spot and we can quickly help you load up.

*Cross Country practice (T and Th) and the scheduled meet on Wednesday are all canceled this week. 6th-8th graders have a meet Saturday morning @8am, that is still on!  Coach Tamo will email families details in a few days.

Heat Warning

Good evening,
We plan on having school tomorrow but PLEASE send in water bottles so the kiddos can refill their bottles with chilled water from out water coolers. Fruit might be a great choice for a snack as it is supposed to be hydrating. Healthine.com recommends watermelon, strawberries, peaches, cantaloupe and oranges as being in the top 10 of most hydrating foods. We have fun activities planned for indoor recess and will have quick brain breaks in the morning under the trees if the temperatures allow. But again, PLEASE send in water bottles (labeled with your kiddos name, of course!)

Sunday, September 4 Update

Good Evening families!

Next week will continue to be extremely hot. PLEASE send your kiddo with a water bottle. We have two cold water refill stations on campus, one in the MPR and one in the nurse’s office just off the corner of the front office, but kiddos NEED a water bottle to refill. We have small dixie cups for those who forget, but that is not sufficient in temperatures this high!

Heat Advisory Through Tuesday Evening

Please see message below and be aware of the excessive Heat Warning for Nevada County.  Please limit outside strenuous activities, encourage plenty of fluids and watch students and staff for signs of distress (Move to a cooler location at the first sign of heat illness (dizziness, nausea, headaches, muscle cramps); rest and slowly drink a cool liquid).

The National Weather Service Sacramento has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for portions of Nevada County beginning Saturday morning through Tuesday evening. Higher temperatures can be dangerous for all people, especially the very young, senior citizens, pregnant women, and those with chronic medical conditions.

Nevada County’s Office of Emergency Services partners with Nevada County Public Health to review our plans for Excessive Heat Emergencies during high-heat events. Nevada County’s Department of Social Services is activating Cooling Centers for residents due to extreme daytime temperatures and minimal overnight recovery.

Beat the Heat at Cooling Centers this Weekend

As temperatures climb into the weekend, residents can beat the heat in cool public places, like your local Nevada County Library branch, grocery stores, or movie theaters. The Grass Valley Library and Madelyn Helling Library (Nevada City) are open until 6:00 p.m., and the Penn Valley Library is open until 4:00 p.m. through Friday, September 2nd.

As we enter an Excessive Heat Warning Saturday, Cooling Centers will open at the Grass Valley and Penn Valley libraries from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday through Tuesday, September 3rd through 6th. Air-conditioned space and water will be available. Well-behaved pets on a leash are allowed, and both locations are ADA accessible. Library desk services will only be available during regular library hours, but residents can access the Wi-Fi and look at the materials while using the space.

Tips for Hot Weather:

  • Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water*, especially before, during, and after outdoor activities.
  • Take frequent breaks while working or playing outdoors.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light clothing; wear a wide-brimmed hat to cover the face, ears, and neck if you’ll be outside.
  • Apply sunscreen (at least SPF 15) 15 minutes before going outdoors and re-apply at least every two hours.
  • Drink plenty of fluids but avoid beverages that have caffeine or alcohol.
  • Plan strenuous outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day; limit time outside during peak heat.
  • Pace physical activities, starting slowly and picking up the pace gradually.
  • Wear sunglasses that provide 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. Chronic exposure to the sun can cause cataracts.
  • Check family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning. Higher temperatures can be especially dangerous for those who have conditions that make the body less able to regulate temperature.
  • Move to a cooler location at the first sign of heat illness (dizziness, nausea, headaches, muscle cramps); rest and slowly drink a cool liquid.
  • Never leave a child or pet in a parked car or asleep in the direct sunlight.
  • Take care of pets! Make sure they have plenty of shade and water to drink. Don’t leave your pets in the car unattended during hot weather, and walk dogs when the temperature is cooler; asphalt can be over 50 degrees hotter than the outdoor temperature.
  • If your doctor limits the amount of fluid you drink or take water pills, ask them how much you should drink when the weather is hot.
