Cross Country Sign Ups

Cross Country is coming! 4th-8th grade are invited to participate. The cost is $150 out of Enrichment Funds and is included in the price of the Blended Middle School. Coach Tamo will hold practice at Arete at 2pm-3pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. (Coach Sarah will hold practices August 120-29 while Coach Tamo is completing a Bi-Athalon in Australia. We have an update to this class, because instructors will be teaching to the four core subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies- Curriculum Funds may be used!
 
There are now two different options. State vaccination regulations apply. Work samples will be sent home.
1. The first proposed program would utilize student's enrichment funds to add a day of on campus instructional time for families who are desiring more higher level academic instruction from credentialed teachers with more advanced projects and more time with other students. Families would need to commit for one 12 week trimester from 9am-12pm, for a total of $180 out of enrichment funds. (Yes, that breaks down to $5 an hour for high quality instruction). We have a nine student minimum. Classes would be broken up into two multi-age groups of 2nd and 3rd grade (Wednesday Class) and 4th and 5th grade (Tuesday Class). Students at the lower grade level (2nd and 4th grades) should be reading at grade level to be able to have success at the multiage learning model. Students could also attend only this class if they wanted to. 
2. The second proposed program would be Literacy Launch. Our little astronaut literacy team will explore new places each week (incorporating social studies learning) and also investigate different creatures and aspects of nature each week (incorporating science learning). We will start with the letter "A" and blast off to places such as Africa, Australia, and the Amazon and explore "A" creatures and nature topics such as alligators, ants, and algae. Our expeditions will take us through the alphabet. We will do fun and engaging read-alouds, book studies, spelling/phonics, and writing surrounding these explorations. We will also incorporate art projects and hands-on activities as part of our literacy adventures! Our time will be very integrated and thematic. Let’s launch into literacy! This class would be appropriate for 1st-3rd graders who are not yet fluent readers.

2nd-8th Grade Fall NWEA Math and AR Reading Assessments 2024-2025

Welcome to the first district assessment schedule for the 2024-2025 school year. Our 2nd-8th grade students will be taking the NWEA Math and Acelerated Reader Testing. The directions are a little lengthy, but please read all the way through them and follow them carefully. We REALLY appreciate the people who sign up early and do not need reminders to sign up. That helps our office save a lot of time. Thank you!

Hello families,

It was so wonderful to visit and/or meet with so many of you this week! We are so excited for the amazing year that is awaiting us!

*If you checked out items for the summer, please return them to the front office this week from 8am-4pm. There is no appointment needed until school starts. We need to inventory them before the school year starts and then you can re-check out the items if you still need them.

*Our amazing garden parents are looking for more parents to help support the garden with completing projects or working with classes. Lori Long is our Garden Coordinator and would love a partner. Email l[email protected] if interested!

All families! Please plan on attending our All Family Orientation on August 13. (This will also serve as Back-to-School Night for the Blended Middle School). We have some interesting new options this year.  Arete Family Orientation We will have an opening session from 9-9:30am called Forms 101. This is great for new and returning families who want to learn all about making the year work smoothly for you with budgeting, ordering, using vendors and subscriptions, reimbursements, etc. This will be run by Mary and Andrea from the office, and Sarah. Next up, Mr. Horton, our music teacher, will be offering a family friendly music experience for parents, teachers, and kids to all enjoy some music together. Then we will have a short break and then two different sessions run by our amazing teachers. Then we will have a quick parent meet up for new parents to meet and connect with returning parents. Children are invited all morning.

*Below is an Update to Cell Phone/Smart Watch Policy…

Arete Charter Academy and the Pleasant Ridge School District recognize the use of smartphones and other mobile communication devices on campus may be beneficial to students and their well-being but could be a distraction to learning and a disruption of the instructional program. To minimize such disruptions students in the grade TK- 8h grades may not use cell phones, smartphones, smartwatches, or other mobile communication devices once they have entered campus for the instructional day. Devices must be turned off and secured in backpacks or phone lockers during the school day. (BP 5131.8) Students may resume the use of their mobile communication device after the end of of the school day

If the school rule is violated, students will be held accountable based on the progressive discipline outlined below. Electronic devices on campus/in class Board Policy 5131.8. Handbooks and EC48900 (k).

1st Offense- Teacher confiscates the object and sends it to the office. Students can retrieve it at the end of the day and the parent is contacted.

2nd Offense- Teacher confiscates the object and sends it to the office. Parents can retrieve it at the end of the day.

3rd Offense- Teacher confiscates the object and sends it to the office. Parents can retrieve it at the end of the day. Students must check in at the office when entering the campus.

4th Offense- Teacher confiscates the object and sends it to the office. Parents can retrieve it at the end of the day. Studentmay not bring the object on campus any longer.

July 24 and Fair Update

Good morning,
You should have all heard from your Educational Advisors by now. If you have not, please let me know so we can remedy that.
 
We passed Scholar Day passes to the Nevada County Fair out in the office during the last 20 day meetings at the end of the year. If you did not pick them up then, you can pick them up starting this Thursday from 8am-4pm. Hope you are having an amazing summer!

July Update

Good evening,
For some of you, this may be your first Edlio update. If so, welcome! We have been working this summer to prepare the campus for a great school year. We are finalizing class descriptions for our Family Orientation on August 13 and then our Educational Advisors will be reaching out to you later this week or early next week to schedule enrollment meeting for August 1-6. In the meantime. Please peek through the following sign ups and complete the ones that apply to you.
 
We have been working to update the campus. Some projects include...
*Moving the Blended Middle School over the the wing on the far right of the campus and renovating the bathrooms.
*Completing stripping the wax off the floors in the MPR (back to 1959) and rewaxing it.
*Making plans to bring in a 2500 water tank to bring water to our garden and orchard 265 days a year.
*El Voellinger is working on several grants for Arete to bring shade to different parts of our campus. She is working on additional secret grant that we will surprise you with if we receive it. It's a very visual one!
*Ordering and arranging two music rooms for our new music teacher and classes including a state of the art piano lab.
 
Can't wait to see you all soon (hopefully at the Back-to-School Ice Cream Social on August 12 at 5:30), but until then- keep enjoying the summer!

If you have not already done so, please log in to your PowerSchool account here and complete or update enrollment forms A-L. (A few of you have already completed these, but we are missing them from 66 students. I have emailed you individually twice, Sheila has emailed you as well and we will start calling tomorrow, Monday, June 10 to follow up) New families should have received an email from Power School with instructions for creating your accounts. You will then need to log back in and complete all enrollment forms. We need all families to complete forms ASAP as we are assigning Educational Advisors. These forms are required in order for your child’s enrollment to be processed for next year. If you need PowerSchool assistance, please [email protected].

We are so excited that Arete Charter Academy will be part of your family’s educational journey for the 2024-2025 school year. We are thrilled to be planning for next year and all of the new adventures we will be having including adding a music teacher, new field trips, enrichment instructors, and classes. We are even looking at adding some three hour morning enrichment classes (see below). We are gathering lots of information about what you would like your child's school year to look like this year including the Resource Center, the Parent Action Committee, off campus activities, and special events throughout the year. Sunday, June 2 Update

Hello all,

It is with a little shock and awe that I compose the final Edlio update for the 2023-2024 school year. I’m in shock that the year is over and in awe at how much growth our students have made. It has been such an privilege to see so many kiddos become readers this year and to see so many become proficient readers. Kiddos are understanding more math concepts and improving their writing skills. We added new family events, fundraisers, field trips and other ways for families to connect. Our chickens went free range this year, bringing joy to all. If you are moving on from Arete this year, we will miss you and wish you the best. If you are staying, we are so happy and honored to have you continue your kiddo’s educational journey with us. It is an honor that we do not take lightly! Until then, enjoy your summer and time with your family!

 

This week we continue with 20 day meetings and chromebook and curriculum check ins. Please make sure to keep your appointments with teachers and Mary so that we can successfully wrap up the year.

 

On Wednesday, we welcome all families to Arete at 5pm for a bring your own picnic to celebrate our 8th graders who are promoting. Students at Arete must be passing classes with a 70% (most schools are 60%) so it is a real accomplishment for those who earned the right to walk across that stage. Please bring your own lawn chairs, blankets, spray fans, etc. (the forecast says 98 degrees!!!). The very personalized ceremony starts at 5:30 prompt and we have cake for all after!

Sunday, May 26 Update

Reminders for this week...

*May 27 Memorial Day Holiday

On May 29 (4-8th) and May 30 (TK-3) we will be having Fun Field Days. On May 30 at 9am, we will be hosting our first ever 8th Grade Breakfast for ALL STUDENTS who are eligible to promote.  

ALL families are invited, BUT PLEASE SIGN UP IF YOU ARE ATTENDING SO WE CAN PLAN FOR NUMBERS. Students are invited to wear summer clothes and sandals and bring a towel. (There is water involved on this fun day)! 

*There will be a photo booth set up for the kindergarten students and their families to take pictures Tuesday.

For all of May, Grass Valley Briar Patch is donating $0.10 for every pound of apples purchased to ARETE!!! Last year we made almost $900. This is the easiest fundraiser ever! We will put 100% of funds towards the Arete garden, which all families are invited to access!

Help our Garden Grow! Buy apples at Briar Patch Food Co-op's Grass Valley location anytime in May and Arete's garden earns 10 cents per bag. Last year we raised almost $1000.

Arete's First Pool Party

On Thursday May 30th after the Field Day, anyone is welcome to continue the fun with an unofficial end of the year pool party at Lake of the Pines.  We can swim from 12:30-2:30pm (the pool closes at 2:40pm that afternoon ).
There is a lifeguard on duty but parents need to be present to watch their kids. 
There will be sliders and lemonade for sale with all proceeds going to help Arete purchase reusable food ware for next school year.
