Join one of our naturalists for a free, guided tour at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery to learn more about salmon, steelhead, and the amazing American River! We will explore the Nimbus Visitor Center, the American River Discovery Trail, and the hatchery raceways. During the tour, we will cover the life cycle and biology of steelhead trout, their habitat needs, and human impact on riparian ecosystems. Tours are typically 90 minutes long and must have between 15-35 participants, though larger groups can reserve separate tours.

January and February are our peak season months for steelhead trout. During this time, our fish ladder is open, and you can expect to see adult steelhead in both the ladder and viewing windows. The egg-taking process occurs on Tuesday mornings for 1-3 hours depending on the number of fish and can be viewed from the Visitor Center during our normal business hours.
