Arete Charter Academy Spring Enrichment

So many fun activities this Spring! I am putting as many of them together as I can so you can budget your Instructional Funding. You can always pay for classes if you run out of funds and want your child to participate.

Make Your Own Mug with Susie Bell

Feb 25 & March 24 from 12:15 - 1:15 grades TK-3

Feb 26 & March 23 from 12:15 - 1:15 grades 4-8

Create a mug out of clay in the first class. It will be fired in the first class and in the second class you will paint it with glazes. The mug will be fired again and returned to Arete for pick up. All materials provided. The mug will be usable, microwavable, nontoxic, etc.

Cost $65 This class requires 2 separate classes, 1 hour each

Field Trip to the Curious Forge-

March 20th 1-3pm

Due to the insurance at this studio, students MUST be age 8 or older by March 20th to attend. This field trip is expensive, $25 each. Please cancel early if your child will not attend after you sign up so we can try to get another student. We pre-pay for all students whether they show or not. We will pay for the first 14 students out of our field trip fund and there are 6 more spots that will be paid out of students individual Instructional Funds. Please email me if your child wants to go after the first 14 spots fill up.

Machine Sewing 4-8th Grade $145

Wednesday April 1, 15, 22, 29 12:15 - 2:15pm
During this class, your child will acquire some fundamentals that will allow her/him to develop autonomy in front of a sewing. Returning students will be making a pair of pajama pants while beginners will start with a drawstring back-pack, in addition to some other simple projects.

Textile Discovery Tk-3rd $54

Thursday April 2, 16, 23, 30 12:15 - 1:15pm

Whether it is your first class or you are a returning students, we will expand your skills. We will embark on a journey of stitches and dyes! The emphasis is the development of hand sewing skills and natural dyes. We will be making some simple projects giving students an opportunity to be creative and have fun.

Introduction to Digital Drawing and Design: 7 years to 14 years $135

Mondays 12:15-1:45, April 13, 20, 27, May 4, 11, 18

Does your child love to draw? Take drawing skills to the next level by integrating technology. We use Wacom Tablets and touch screen laptops for each student. Students are not paired up for this class so artists can have total control over their digital drawing creations. Working with a digital canvas and toolset also inspires unique art work while building muscle memory and hand eye coordination. Following are some features of the class:

Discovering the advantages of digital drawing and painting

Comparing the differences between traditional methods of art creation vs. digital compositions.

Wacom tablets and touch screen laptops for each student to practice their drawing skills

Understanding creative design terms such as pixilation, vector-based

Integrating elements of traditional into a digital art such as: Line, Shape, Form, Texture, Value, and Space.

Understanding positive and negative drawing in a digital workspace.

Researching how integrating layers come together to create multi-perspective scenes

Tuesday 4-8th Writing Workshop Did you miss the last Writing Workshop focused on Informational Writing? Do you need more practice with this genre?

We are offering another opportunity for students to work on Informative Writing. In doing so we will work on note taking and completing the writing process from drafting through to final copy. New to this session will be the practice of writing the Perfect Answer to informational articles. A necessary skill, as short essay answers are used in all school subjects. Students will also have an opportunity to develop their typing skills utilizing an online program. Mrs. Codiga will run this workshop on Tuesdays for five weeks. It is important for your student to attend each session for the duration of this class 2/11 - 3/10. The work we do one day will roll over to subsequent days. Click link for more information.

Your child is invited to sign up to participate in Lab Fridays! Students have a two hour opportunity on Fridays to work on Science and English Language Arts lessons. The cost of each lab is $10.

Starting in late February and continuing into March on three Fridays, Arete will be offering Family Life for any interested middle school students. Valentine's Day Sign Up for K-5 Students

We will have a Valentine's Day Party for all interested K-5 students on Thursday, February 13th from 11am-12pm. We will have some fun math activities, treats and will trade Valentine's Cards. If your child would like to bring in Valentine Cards, please send in 30 cards and leave the "To" part blank and have your child just complete the "From" portion. Thanks!

Read To Succeed is a free program that allows students in grades K-6 to earn tickets to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom just by reading six hours for fun.
Here is how your child can earn a free ticket to Six Flags:
2) Your child may read any books they choose.
3) Keep track of your child’s reading using the form below.
4) Record your child’s reading at our website.
5) Receive a free Six Flags Discovery Kingdom ticket from Mrs. Schwartz in May.
Students can optionally earn bonus awards by reading more than six hours such as discounts on additional tickets for family members, Season Passes or Memberships.

Arete Charter Academy- January Events

This 4 week class will teach the basics of Spanish language from the alphabet to animals, cognates to numbers, food, culture, and more! 

Maestra Ford will conduct this series on Wednesdays, Jan 8-Jan 29 (4th-8th) and Thursdays, Jan 9-30 (K-3rd) from 12:15-1:15.

Cost: $10/class; minimum 3 students/class

Take and Bake Class

Students will help create a healthy snack with "Produce of the Day" and a sampling of the "Daily Dish".  Additionally, they will create a "Take and Bake" contribution for their family.  All dishes will have instructions for fresh baking at home! 12:15-1:45pm (Monday 4-8 and Tuesday K-3)

3 week Session, $80 fee is all inclusive; 6 student minimum/maximum




Jan. 7th (K-3) and Jan 13 (4-8): Grandma's Homemade Bread Pudding (This is a funny schedule because we think there is no school and a Professional Development Day on Jan 6 and there is a field trip to Crocker Art Museam on January 14.)

Jan. 20th/21st: Sweet Treat Fruit Pie

Jan. 27th/28th: Warm and Crunchy Oatmeal Bake

November Happenings

So Many fun happenings in November (and December)!

*Field Tip to Placer Nature Center. This field trip has a max capacity of 20 students (their rules because it is very hands-on). This is a drop off/pick up field trip for Arete students only. This year's theme is "Bugs, Bats, and Owls" Drop off at 10am and pick up at 12pm. There is a lovely outdoor play area if you want to have a picnic lunch after. Amanda Tamo will be the on-site teacher there that day. Arete pays for students.

Phonics instruction for parents and families- Nov 7 & 14, 12-12:30pm. Fee is @$20 out of Curriculum & Academic Instructional Funds and you take home many hands-on supplies. We will be offering two workshops focused on learning strategies and techniques for making phonics instruction hands-on and engaging. This workshop will be geared towards families who are using TK-1st grade curriculum. Please bring your students so you may practice these techniques together in a learning environment. Mrs. Codiga and Mrs. Ford will be leading our families in two half hour sessions. We look forward to helping you navigate phonics instruction and sight words with easy to use strategies and every day materials.

*After School Snack Attack with Susan Gouveia. Kids will create a healthy, delicious & nutritious "Snack of the Day". Additionally they will Make & Take a contribution for the family dinner. $105 from Enrichment Instructional Funds includes instruction & ingredients fee for Make & Take Meal for all three sessions. All classes run from 12:10-2:15 in room A-3.

*Stem Field Trip at Roller King- Friday, November 15 from 1-4pm. Arete pays for the first 30 Arete students. K-8. Learn all about the science behind roller skating. Students will have a chance to showcase their creativity and and design a new feature for a skate.

*Holiday Make & Take Gifts- 12-3pm $75 (includes all materials) from Enrichment Instructional Funds. Make & Take 6 Unique Holiday Gifts for the whole family. Bring your list of names & we will make & wrap: Specialty Tea Blends, Garden Art, Exotic Spice Blends, Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix, Tuscan Herb Salt Dec 10th (K-3) & 11th (4-8) All classes run from 12:10-3:30 in room A-3.

Arete Charter Academy- Winter Pancake Breakfast 2019- PJ or Ugly Christmas Sweater Day

We will have our Christmas Breakfast Wednesday, December 18th for 4-8 and Thursday, December 19th for K-3 from 10-11am. Please have all donations here by 9am. Please pay attention to what days your kiddos come in and sign up for items on that day. Some items we will ask for on Wednesday and share them on Thursday. Also, they may wear their jammies or ugly Christmas sweaters that day and bring in a favorite stuffed animal and/or Christmas book to share. Thanks for all of your support and please remember to mark all bowls, platters, serving utensils and storage containers with your name!

Arete Charter Academy- Thanksgiving Stone Soup Meal

We will be hosting two separate Stone Soup events on Monday, November 25 for 4-8th and Tuesday, November 26 for K-3. Please check the date when you sign up. We will be reading the story Stone Soup where many people each contribute a little to make a beautiful soup. We are asking each child to bring a cleaned and chopped soup vegetable (carrots, onion, cabbage, celery, potato, fennel, tomatoes, etc) to add to our community soup. We will cook it and then gather around and enjoy our mini-feast. Please sign up to contribute if you are able. We are hoping ALL students can bring the cleaned and chopped veggie (no sign up needed).
