September Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Corner
Dear Families,
This month, as part of our Why Try initiative, we are focusing on the theme of kindness—and we’re using one of the friendliest animals around to help us explore it: the capybara!
At school, your child participated in a short mini-lesson called “Kindness Like a Capybara!” We watched a short video showing how capybaras are gentle and welcoming to other animals, and we discussed what kindness looks like in our classroom and school community. Each student also began decorating their own paper capybara and writing (or drawing) an act of kindness on it.
We’d love for you to continue the conversation at home with a simple mini-lesson of your own! Here’s how:
Mini Kindness Lesson at Home
-
Watch together: Look up a short video of capybaras being kind or gentle to other animals. (There are many sweet, age-appropriate ones on YouTube!)
-
Talk about it: Ask your child:
-
What does it mean to be kind?
-
How can we show kindness at home, at school, or with friends?
-
How were the capybaras kind in the video?
-
-
Create another capybara: Use a blank sheet of paper to draw or trace a capybara together. Inside, help your child draw or write a new act of kindness they’ve done or want to do.
-
Send it in: Return the finished capybara to school so we can add it to our growing “Herd of Kindness” bulletin board in the library!
Thank you for helping us build a culture of kindness—one capybara at a time!
Warmly,
You Kindness Crew Leader
