Sunday, June 18 Update

Happy Father's Day to all of the Arete dads, new and returning!

To all of the new families receiving their first Sunday night Arete Update, WELCOME! We are so excited to have you on this journey with us!

To returning families who still need to turn in items, please work with Mary this week to get your items in. She is working so hard to inventory, organize and, prepare curriculum for a speedy checkout in August. If you have broken or lost items, please write a check to PRSD or pay on mymealtime.com ASAP so that we can replace them.

To new and returning families who have not complete their Powerschool forms, please do that ASAP as I'm assigning Educational Advisors now and we need that step done first. Andrea is on summer break, so email me at [email protected] for help.

If you have not received our update to our Master Agreement, I'm including it here so everyone is fully informed of the educational improvements we are making for next year.

We are so excited that Arete Charter Academy will be part of your family’s educational journey for the 2023-2024 school year. We are thrilled to be planning for next year and all of the new adventures we will be having including new field trips, enrichment instructors, and classes. We also will be working on re-situating our chicken coop to prepare for possible flooding. (This winter was wild!). We also will be updating a few of our policies to ensure that we are showing growth in teaching our students how to read and do math. These are all outlined in the Master Agreement and Parent Handbook that you will be signing in August. All documents for next year are attached to this email for your perusal.

This may sound like a lot of changes at first, but please remember that everyone at Arete is on your kiddos’ team, and your Educational Advisor will be there to support your family and that EA’s will work with families as a team to assist with these requirements.

Here are some reminders of what our current practices are and will be for next year.

*All district and state testing will be in person only and is still required if your child attends Arete.

*Enrollment meetings and 20 Day Meetings will be in person for the first three meetings of the year. There may be an opportunity for families who hold their meetings on time with their Educational Advisor and turn in all logs and work samples on the day of their meeting, to move to Zoom meetings after the first trimester if it is effective for both the family and the Educational Advisor. If the Educational Advisor, student, parent team is approved to move to Zoom meetings, the parent and student will need to be present in the meeting and all documents and logs will need to be scanned to the Educational Advisor at least 24 hours before the meeting.

*There are requirements from our audit by the state that we need to show we are meeting. This is what we have been requesting this year and will be requiring for the 2023-2024 school year.

-Please bring all student work from the 20 days of instruction to showcase, and the Educational Advisor will choose two samples for each subject from what is provided. This way the team has a real picture of the progress your child is making.

-All samples must have one sentence per grade level. K students can label with letters and words or dictate to parents. 8th grade must have EIGHT sentences, etc.

-Math samples should have at least eight problems or more (we understand this will look different from kinder than 8th grade).

-Samples should be two separate samples and not a second page of the same sample.

-First grade on up should be in the kiddos own writing, unless they have an IEP in which case,  start expecting that by 3rd-4th grade.

*Assignment Completion Log- Must be filled out in detail with specific lessons/topics of study or percentages (online curriculum only).

We believe that we need to have these practices in place to ensure the appropriate amount of growth for all students. We also acknowledge that these options might not feel like the right fit for your family. We would be very sad to lose any of our families, but know that we are so lucky in our county to have so many wonderful school choices. If you do not feel that you can agree to these changes, please email me at [email protected] to let me know that your child will be attending a different school. If you feel that these are changes that your family can comply with, please log in to your PowerSchool account here and complete or update enrollment forms A-L. (A few of you may have already completed these.) New families should have received an email from Power School with instructions for creating your accounts. You will then need to log back in and complete all enrollment forms. We need all families to complete forms by June 9 as we have a lottery scheduled for June 14 and need to know how many spots we have open. These forms are required in order for your child’ enrollment to be processed for next year. If you need PowerSchool assistance, please contact Andrea Magda at [email protected].

New families to Arete must provide proof of residency in two areas before their child is considered a student at Arete and anything may be purchased.

All new enrollees’ need to provide one document from each of the categories below:

Category l - One Proof Required:  At least one of the following documents showing the name and residence address of the parent/guardian or caregiver within the district: (Education Code 48204.1)

Good Morning Pleasant Ridge Families,

Pleasant Ridge is pleased to announce that we will be offering three (3) different individual 5-day enrichment programs that will be free for next year's K - 5th grade students.   The three (3) different programs will be held at the following different dates and locations:
  • Arete Charter Academy (July 6, 7, 10-12)
  • Cottage Hill Elementary (July 13, 14, 17-19)

Pleasant Ridge students from all of our sites are welcome to attend any or all of the weeks.   The programs will be nine (9) hours a day and include meals (breakfast, lunch, snack).   The focus will be on enriching activities and each 5-day program will feature one offsite field trip.
The programs will be free to all students, however, space will be limited and priority will be given to ELO-P eligible students.  You can read how to become ELO-P qualified here.
We are still in the process of finalizing many of the details related to the programs and their schedule.   Please be on the lookout for more specific information in the coming weeks.

Stay OUT, stay safe!

As temperatures are increasing more people are looking for water activities, but the warmer temperatures also mean that snow is melting causing faster currents. Warmer temperatures are always an invitation for people to head out for a swim, but a rainy and snowy start to the year means it's not yet time to be in the water, officials warn. Many waterways are full, and the snowpack from months of stormy weather has still not fully melted. "Right now is just not the right time to be in the river swimming. The river is so unpredictable right now. It's very high and very cold.  As a reminder, ANYTIME you and your children are near water, wear a life vest!

Sheila
Arete's own gem, Sheila Voleck has voted and honored yesterday as PRSD's Classified Employee of the Year for the ENTIRE district. This is because she is so amazing and helpful to all of us. Here is why she was chosen.

Sheila has been a dedicated employee at two PRSD school sites for over 19 years. She is incredibly committed to her job and follows through on every duty until successful completion.   She is kind, humble and hard working in every avenue, no matter the task. Her willingness to jump right in and help is just a part of who she is as a person, but deeply appreciated and needed being on the front line (office).

Sheila anticipates what jobs require completion and reaches out to other staff to ensure that she finishes them. She looks at ways to make things more efficient and easier to understand by our community.

Sheila is an amazing coworker. She is always willing to lend a hand, support, comfort and provide laughter when most needed. She is adored by students, staff, and families.

Sheila brings a blend of compassion and calmness that is desperately needed at every school.  We love that she can laugh at herself and make others laugh, she lifts others up just by being her.

She is willing to take on the least desired jobs and does them with full commitment to do her very best, which is amazing. She has volunteered to provide lunch supervision for middle school students and does it with a smile on her face, every day, rain or shine!

Sheila serves breakfast and lunch to our students and she keeps track of which kiddo prefers each item and saves them to deliver them. For middle school students who do not always feel seen, this makes all of the difference that she is looking out for them in every way.

Fellow employees comment over and over that they can always go to Sheila for help or to have any question answered and she is kind and patient every time. She is very humble and honest and immediately owns up to any mistakes.  When she was called into jury duty she was upset because she felt like she was letting others down by not being there, she’s a real team player.

Sheila is honest and discrete. She works hard to support our students and families, while keeping people's information as private as possible. She makes sure to fill me in on all of the little details she learns about each student so that I can better support them.

Families and students love Sheila as she is so helpful to all. She takes her time with people in the front office and never makes them feel rushed.  She takes time to explain things and when she doesn’t know the answer to a question she’ll find out and follow through.

Sheila is the manifestation of everything we want our students and employees to be.   Sheila is kind to everyone she comes in contact with, she is empathetic, and she is hard working.    Her humility makes her almost easy to take for granted, however, when you spend any amount of time with her you quickly realize how much you appreciate her. Heart of gold…the kind of person you want around your children and the kind of person you’d be lucky to call a friend.

Sheila always goes above and beyond what was asked of her and what was expected of her without hesitation. She never voices discontentment when a new policy or procedure needs to be learned. She is often assessing and reassessing how she can better serve our school community and is always striving to do better! Those are traits often found in people that genuinely want to help others and have the humility to get better themselves.
